Should I get highlights or Balayage?

That is a question we hear pretty often. This is why we would love to talk a little bit about both, so you can have a better perspective and decide what works better for you.

Balayage

Balayage is a French coloring technique developed in the 1970s. It's a freehand painting technique where color or bleach is applied by hand, rather than by using the traditional foiling technique. This technique produces a subtle color outcome and is best used on base colors in the dark blonde range. Better results can be seen when the hair is below the shoulders.

Highlights

Highlights are achieved when select strands of hair are woven out of a thin subsection of hair. They are laid over a foil and it is the best way to reach a lighter color, if that is the goal. Those weaves of hair being lightened are the highlights, meaning they will be lighter than the strands not woven into the foiled and wrapped hair.

The Main Difference

Balayage is a more visual technique, while highlighting (that follows a sectioning pattern) is more precise. Balayage allows the colorist to personalize your color placement. Usually no foils are used. Foiled highlights can achieve much more than just slight lightening. Foiling can remove the red and orange zones much more effectively than balayage can. Your stylist will have more control over the tone of your hair and the dimension desired.
